Minister of State with responsibility for Equality Issues, Mr. Seán Power T.D., today hosted a breakfast for over 120 guests, in the National Gallery of Ireland, to celebrate International Women’s Day 2008. The focus of this year's breakfast is on those who provide care in our society.

Addressing the breakfast, Minister Power said: "This is the third annual celebration organised and hosted by my Department and this year we have chosen to focus on the contribution made by women in Irish life in the broad fields of community and caring.

I welcome our many guests this year who work in one way or another to support and advance the voluntary sector in Ireland, obviously with a focus on women.  This may be the childcare organisations, those working with the victims of domestic violence, those in the nursing profession or those working with more marginalised women in our society. I also extend a warm welcome to homemakers whose are constantly shaping our next generation."

The Minister also highlighted developments which impacted upon the women of Ireland and gender equality over the past year, including the establishment of COSC as an Executive Office of the Department of Justice and the publication of the ten year National Women’s Strategy which is available on the Department’s website –
