Mr. Frank Fahey, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform today announced an expenditure package of 6 million Euro in grants under the Independent Living Support Programme to assist people with disabilities.
Sixty four voluntary and not-for-profit organisations throughout the country have been approved funding for the purchase of capital equipment which will assist them in enabling and maintaining independent living for people with disabilities.
Making the announcement Minister Fahey said, "This Government is committed to improving and making a practical difference to the lives of people with disabilities, to promoting their integration into society, to changing attitudes and to combating the discrimination and poverty they experience.
This funding will enable these 64 organisations to deliver a wide range of new equipment including assistive technology, vehicles and supports to enhance independent living which I believe will have an immediate and positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities."
The Minister also noted that all of the applications were independently assessed by an evaluation team working under the aegis of the National Disability Authority and he acknowledged the important contribution made by the Authority in this regard.
