€1m approved for CCTV development in Ballymun

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Brian Lenihan, T.D., today announced the approval of over €2.75 million in the latest round of grant funding under the Community-based CCTV Scheme.

The Community Based Scheme is designed to provide financial assistance to qualifying local organisations towards meeting the capital costs associated with the establishment of local community CCTV systems. These grants are provided by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and where successful applications are from RAPID areas, matching funding is provided by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs

Making the announcement at the Ballymun Civic Centre Minister Lenihan said: "In supporting the work of An Garda Síochána, CCTV schemes can play an important role in fighting and deterring crime and anti-social behaviour, and in doing so afford a greater peace of mind to communities. Crime affects the whole of society and it cannot be tackled effectively without the support and engagement of local communities. The Community-based CCTV programme is an excellent way to empower local people and businesses to work in partnership with An Garda Síochána and local authorities to help make our communities safer and stronger."

Capital grant funding of €2.755 million has been approved for 16 local groups from 12 areas around the country (details below). These development grants will allow these groups to install and operate their own systems under the guidance of the Local Authorities and An Garda Síochána.

Included in this round of funding are five successful applications from the Ballymun area, under the umbrella of Ballymun Regeneration Ltd., which are awarded a total of € 1 million.

The Minister said: "Ballymun is being transformed by the ongoing regeneration project.  As part of the overall strategy to support that regeneration and to make the new Ballymun a safer and better place to live and to do business, Community CCTV systems will help the local Gardaí and the community to work together to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour."

Today’s funding brings to 42 the number of local community groups that have been awarded capital grant funding to date under the community based CCTV scheme.

Under the scheme funding is also available for preparing and submitting CCTV proposals. A total of € 19,100 in pre-development funding is awarded to four groups from Athboy, Co. Meath; the Moatview/Darndale area of north Dublin; Ballymahon, Co. Longford and Tymon Bawn in the Tallaght area.  These grants will help the groups involved to develop high-quality proposals for CCTV schemes which can then be submitted for capital development funding.

Grants have been awarded in the following areas:

Substantive Grants:
