The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr Michael McDowell TD has announced that the Government, at its meeting today, approved the preparation of a Bill to provide for the establishment of a DNA database.
The Minister said "I am on record that I believe a DNA database would make a significant contribution to the fight against crime. This has been the experience elsewhere where databases are already in operation. I have previously made clear my view that a DNA database should, therefore, be established in Ireland. I am however aware of the complexity and sensitivity of the issues involved and was therefore keen to have the benefit of the Law Reform Commission's examination of the issue, including its views on the level of safeguards to be included, before proceeding with plans to establish the database. The Commission published its report last November. I have welcomed that report and will be paying close attention to its recommendations in the preparation of this Bill."
The Minister added "A database will obviously offer greater possibilities to identify perpetrators of crime. I believe that a database will result in improved detection levels as well as improved efficiency in the use of Garda resources."
Drafting will now commence and the Minister expects to publish the Bill later this year.
