The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter, T.D., this evening signed into law two new Statutory Instruments proposed by the Court Rules Committees to make the wearing of ceremonial wigs optional in the courts.  The new rules come into effect from tomorrow (14 October).

Speaking this evening the Minister said: "I warmly welcome this initiative from the Chief Justice and the Presidents of the High and Circuit Courts to dispense with the compulsory wearing of wigs by judges in court.  It should be recognised as a further small but significant step in the ongoing process of reform."
