Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence Mr. Alan Shatter, T.D., has today warmly welcomed the decision by the Judiciary itself to establish a Judicial Council on an interim basis. The Minister had been briefed on the proposal by the Chief Justice, Mrs. Justice Susan Denham, and expressed his support for the initiative. Speaking after today’s announcement, the Minister said "I very much welcome this initiative by the Judiciary and look forward to working with representatives of the Interim Judicial Council next year as steps are taken by Government towards establishing a formal body through the forthcoming Judicial Council Bill."

The Judicial Council Bill is currently being drafted by the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel and is due for publication during 2012.
