The Government has today approved a proposal by the Tánaiste to appoint retired Judge Pat McCartan to assess any new and updated evidence the Stardust Relatives and Victims Committee have uncovered in order to recommend whether a Commission of Investigation should be established into the Stardust Tragedy of 1981.

The Dáil motion, passed on 26th January, specified that the assessment process should be conducted urgently by an independent person who has the trust of the families concerned and Judge McCartan was identified by the SRVC as an independent person who has their trust. He has expressed a willingness to begin straight away and work is already underway to facilitate him in getting the necessary supports set up to allow him to do so.
