    On the 30th November 2012, the Garda Commissioner directed the Garda Professional Standards Unit (GPSU) to carry out an “Examination of the processes and systems in place to deal with cancellation of Fixed Charge Processing System notices by Superintendents and Inspectors acting in that capacity”.

    The Irish Prison Service continued to work closely with the Inspector of Prisons in 2012 to implement as many of his recommendations as practicable. Following the Inspector of Prisons’ report in March 2012, regarding the introduction of a new prisoner complaints model for the Irish Prison Service which meets best practice and our international obligations in this regard, a new complaints model is being introduced in the Irish Prison Service on a phased basis.

    Ensure better co-ordination between the Irish Prison Service and the Probation Service to create an integrated offender management programme. The Irish Prison Service and Probation Service will develop a multiagency approach to offender management and rehabilitation from pre to post imprisonment in order to reduce re-offending and improve prisoner outcomes.
  • 07/05/2013   Castlerea Prison Visiting Committee Annual Report 2012
    The Committee meet each month on the first Thursday of the month. The meetings were well attended. Visits were undertaken by two members of the committee who were nominated monthly. They conducted detailed and comprehensive tours of the prison.
  • 07/05/2013   Cloverhill Visiting Committee Annual Report 2012
    Committee members meet every second Thursday of each Month. There are seven members and every meeting is usually full attendance. Two members meet with prisoners who have requested consultation and report back to the committee with there concerns. They also meet with staff and tour the prison regularly talking to prisoners. Discussions are also held with professional and non professional staff in the prison.

    The committee individually and collectively made several frequent unannounced visits at various times throughout the year. This was very beneficial in observing the operations of the Centre and assessing the needs of the women, their environment, the general atmosphere and the women’s residential accommodation.
