The Department of Justice has become aware that some members of the public have received scam phone calls purporting to be an official from our Department. The caller is making false claims in relation to arrest warrants, money laundering or other criminal activities.
The person is then informed that their PPS number has been linked with suspicious activity and are asked to contact an agent to provide further details.
This is a sophisticated scam. We urge members of the public not to engage with these callers, not to return calls to these numbers and not to share any personal information with the callers. Gardaí have been made aware of the scam calls.
The Department wishes to make it absolutely clear that we NEVER request Bank account or other financial institution account details from our customers by phone or SMS.
Further advice on scam calls is available from the Commission for Communications Regulation website: https://www.comreg.ie/consumer-information/home-phone/scam-calls/.
