In January 2009 the Minister for Justice and Equality, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., announced that the issue of the use of Electronic Monitoring technology would be considered by a Project Board. The Project Board has been established to look at the implementation of electronic monitoring in this jurisdiction and is comprised of the following:
Mr. Vivian Geiran, Deputy Director, Probation Service (Chair);
Mr. Kieran O'Dwyer, Director of Prison Regimes, Irish Prison Service;
Chief Superintendent Noel White, An Garda Síochána;
Ms. Mary Burke, Principal Officer, Department of Justice and Equality.
On 2 July 2010 the Minister for Justice and Equality signed an Order (S.I. No. 336 of 2010) commencing certain provisions of Part 10 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 for the purpose of the electronic monitoring of persons on temporary release from prison.
Criminal Justice Act 2006 (Electronic Monitoring Devices) Regulations 2010
In August 2010 the Minister for Justice and Equality signed Regulations (S.I. No. 409 of 2010) prescribing the the types of electronic monitoring devices that may be used for the purposes of monitoring the compliance of persons with Section 108(4) of the Criminal Justice Act, 2006 (No. 26 of 2006).
