The Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr Brian Lenihan TD, today welcomed the announcement by the Garda Commissioner of the establishment of a Working Group to review the training and development arrangements in An Garda Síochána for garda and civilian personnel.

Commenting on the initiative, Minister Lenihan said: "The Government has increased Garda financial and personnel resources to record levels. We are committed to continuing the unprecedented rate of recruitment, of both Gardaí and civilians, into An Garda Síochána and to sustaining the recent significant investment in new equipment and systems.  As Minister, I am determined to ensure that An Garda Síochána delivers a world class policing service to the Irish people.

I want to ensure that this investment in people, equipment and systems is used to its fullest extent to make the roads and streets of Ireland safer. The training and development of personnel, in which An Garda Síochána has an excellent and internationally renowned record, is a vital element in this respect. It is timely that the Commissioner should review the Force’s training and development arrangements at this juncture in the history of the organisation."
