Question

81. Deputy Fergus O'Dowd asked the Minister for Justice and Equality the annual cost of transporting persons committed to prison for the non-payment of fines from 2010 to 2013; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15834/15]

Answer

Minister for Justice and Equality (Deputy Frances Fitzgerald): As outlined in my reply to the Deputy to Parliamentary Question No. 340 of Wednesday, 15th April, 2015 persons committed to prison are transported by Garda vehicles as part of their routine duty and not separately accounted for. I am further informed that the annual cost pertaining to the transport of persons committed to prison using Garda personnel and vehicles for the non-payment of fines is not readily available and would require an inordinate amount of administrative resources to obtain this level of detail.
However, for the sake of completeness as regards the use of other methods of conveyance of persons detained where deemed operationally expedient by the Commissioner, I am advised the annual cost of these services from 2010 to date is as follows. I am further advised that the reduction from 2012 to date was due to the greater availability of Garda vehicles for the conveyance of persons committed to prison.

Year Annual Cost
2010 €775,493
2011 €698,136
2012 €244,711
2013 €208,047
2014 €227,873
2015 (to 13/04/2015) €80,232
