Deputy Catherine Murphy asked the Minister for Justice and Equality further to Parliamentary Question No. 278 of 30 January 2018, if he has read the report of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice and Equality; the status of the preparation a new Communications (Retention of Data) Bill; the timeframe for its introduction; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for Justice and Equality (Deputy Charles Flanagan): The report of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice and Equality on pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017 was received in my private office on 5 February last.
I have read the Committee’s report and I am in the process of considering the recommendations made to see whether changes are required to be made to the Bill, which is currently with the Office of the Parliamentary Council for drafting, with a view to publication in this spring/summer session.
