8. Deputy Jack Chambers asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the drug squad numbers in each Garda division for each of the past five years and to date in 2017, in tabular form; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [15750/17]

Deputy Frances Fitzgerald: I cannot make all of those figures available on the floor of the House. In the full written reply to the question I will provide Deputy Chambers with a breakdown of the detailed information requested on the drugs squad numbers in each Garda division for each of the past five years, and right up until February 2017. This is the latest date for which figures are readily available for the record. Contained in my written reply to the Deputy are details of the drugs unit personnel numbers between 2012 and 2017.
I shall pick out one or two figures from that reply in order to give Deputy Chambers an idea. In 2012 there was a total of 310 personnel and in 2017 there was 233. Quite clearly, the point made by the Deputy about numbers in particular drugs units highlights that people were not being recruited. The fact that people were not being recruited clearly impacted on the drugs unit personnel within An Garda Síochána around the country.
