28 July, 2011

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter TD, has received an interim report from the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission on its investigation into alleged comments by members of the Garda Síochána to female protesters at a "Shell to Sea" demonstration on 31 March 2011.

The Minister has laid the report before both Houses of the Oireachtas.

Laying the report, the Minister said:

"I welcome the submission of this interim report, and the progress which has been made in the investigation into these allegations.  Given the indications in this report that consideration is being given to the potential for disciplinary action, and to issues relating to obstruction of GSOC officers, it would not be right for me to make any further comment at this time.  I do, however, look forward to the finalisation of the investigation as soon as possible."
