The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr Alan Shatter T.D., today announced the appointment of Mr Michael Donnellan as the new Director General of the Irish Prison Service with effect from 5th December, 2011.

Mr Donnellan was selected for appointment following an open competition run by the Public Appointments Service.  He will replace Mr Brian Purcell who was appointed in August to the post of Secretary General of the Department of Justice and Equality.

Mr Donnellan is currently Director of the Probation Service.  He has previous experience in health and social services in Ireland and London.  He also managed two of the children detention schools.

Michael Donnellan is currently the Director of the Probation Service having been appointed in 2005.  Prior to this, he served as Director of two children detention schools in Dublin. 

Michael spent his early career working within adult psychiatry before specialising in child and adolescent psychiatry. He worked in inner city London as a Social Worker, and then as Manager of Brixton Child Guidance Unit, before returning to Ireland in 1994.
